……What is the barbaric robe you wear, || Shugoro Yamamoto Arahoshi (2)

In Toshie’s mind, a desolate landscape came to mind: a leafless forest, bare thin branches whimpering in the bitter cold wind, an endless wasteland clinging to the wretchedness of dead grass, a long gray road stretching from nowhere to nowhere, and a long, dark, lead-colored cloud under which lay a horrifyingly cold and icy landscape.
The lonely figure of a man trudging through such a landscape will forever haunt his imagination. Fifty years of hard work may build the Golden Hall and the Jade Tower, and may give him power and pleasure, but once he meets death, all will be gone forever.

How can this contradiction be explained? …… For six years he had been trying to answer this question, but the more he pursued it, the more he found himself at a loss. He had studied in Buddhist temples in various mountains, but there he had been exposed to the tedious philosophy that played with the syllables of scriptures, and when he tapped on the Zen gate, all he could smell was the odor of Ruri Zen masked in paper mulberry. –The reason why it is so easy to say, “Life, death, and transcendence” is because of the resignation that death is an unavoidable fate, and not based on the affirmation of the existence of life. It is an undeniable fact that all living things will eventually die, and no amount of compensation can compensate for this, but it is also a fact that all living things are alive. If death is undeniable, life cannot be denied either. Shun’ei practiced with the mind and body pounding on this one point, and what he has gained to date has been nothing but emptiness. The desolate landscape that haunts his mind, the hopeless human figure on the road to death, pulls at his thoughts with an irresistible force.

The desolate landscape that haunts his mind, the hopeless human figure on the road to death, pulls at his thoughts with an irresistible force. The first time I saw him, he was a great man, and he was a great man, and he was a great man, and he was a great man. The whole country was defeated by his majesty. However, it is still far from peaceful, and the Hojo clan’s strong power has taken root in the Kanto region, and now they are daring to challenge Toyotomi to a battle. They think that a bowl of porridge will suffice for the people who are being driven away by war. It is wrong to argue about the validity or otherwise of such facts alone, and even Toshie has no idea how to put them into practice. He had doubts even about Buddhism itself. Religion does not emerge through theory, and its origin is very simple and straightforward, so he sought a way out by going back to its origin. The first of these is the obvious point that the Buddha was a Jerseyite. Therefore, the destruction of the principal image was not his goal, but a means of starting over from there.

Therefore, the destruction of the principal image was not his goal, but a means of starting over from there. Later that night, one of the little monks brought him a rice ball and tried to make him eat it with his own hands, but Toshie kept her eyes closed and did not move as if she were a stone. The little monk repeatedly reminded her, “Don’t eat, or you’ll get hungry. …… But she didn’t respond with a nod or a nod, so he left the rice in the bamboo skin within easy reach and quietly left. The next morning, when the same little monk brought in the rice again, he found the previous night’s rice untouched. ……Toshie-sama, are you all right? The little monk looked at him worriedly and said, “You’d better eat a little or you’ll die. …… Toshie still didn’t answer, and the little monk sighed, as if he was too lost in thought. He did not eat, drink, or sleep for days, until the fifth day, but I don’t remember how much time passed. He was ruminating over the little monk’s words without realizing it, and suddenly it seemed as if he could find a way out of the maze, and he continued to elaborate on the falsehoods of his thoughts. If you don’t eat, you get hungry, and eventually you die. It is true, and it is the very next thing that it is true. There is something right next to that, something ……

There is something right next to that, something …… that makes you see. Four. Toshie’s eyes opened into the darkness, and she waited for Chieko to emerge, breathing steadily and mentally. The inside of the storehouse was filled with a reddish glow, and the sound of burning objects could be heard nearby. –The temple was on fire, and Toshie felt her breath catch in her throat as she staggered to her feet and leaned against the door. A battle is brewing,…… he muttered, and then the bells stopped ringing and the sound of fleeing footsteps and shrieking screams once again rang loudly in his ears. Shunhui shouted without knowing, “Open up here ……,” but there was no one to answer. He kept calling out the little monk’s name, but when the fire burned out, there was not even a human voice to be heard anymore, except for a tremendous moan. He pulled himself away from the door and slammed his bound body against it as hard as he could, three or five times, but the door didn’t budge, his undrinking body was exhausted from that alone, and he panted heavily. The main hall was probably on fire, and a rumbling sound, as if a huge trident were boiling, enveloped the sutra storehouse. ……This place will be on fire soon, and we will burn to death if we stay here,” Toshie felt a surge of anger as she realized this clearly, not because she was afraid of death, or that the temple would burn down, but because she felt a rage that she could not explain, and that she did not know why. It was the cry of his blood, the blood of a local samurai coursing through his body, ripping through his being as a Buddhist. The sound of footsteps coming toward the back gate, and someone scrambling for the door, and the echo of a hatchet, probably to break the lock, was deafening. The sound of the hatchet deafened him.

The sound of the hatchet deafened him. …… Meishin or Toshie shouted and slipped to the doorway, the sound of the lock falling, the door opened, he involuntarily covered his eyes, the door opened and suddenly he was hit in the face by a pillar of fire rising into the sky and a burning fire on his brow, he was blinded and staggered, someone held him up. Someone supported him. He was blinded and staggered, and someone supported him, shouting, “Toshie-sama, quickly,……, quickly,” and his hands clasped him, and he staggered as the hands guided him. It was not Meishin, he knew immediately by the sound of her voice and the touch of her hand, it was a woman, it had to be a woman, but he had no idea who it was, …… who could it be? As he ran through the fire that threatened to scorch his skin, he tried to make out the figure of the person who had made such an impression on him. Just outside the back gate Toshie’s eyes were open, but her body was so weak from the long fast and mental struggle that she had to cling to the hand of the woman accompanying her as she made her way through the fleeing crowd.

Just outside the back gate Toshie’s eyes were open, but her body was so weak from the long fast and mental struggle that she had to cling to the hand of the woman accompanying her as she made her way through the fleeing crowd. The woman ran, dragging Toshie behind her as she ran, and then she cut across the road and ran into the woods. Toshie heard the woman’s voice, panting and encouraging her to persevere, so close to her ear that she could almost hear it. V. There was no more light from the flame. There was no more light from the flames, and it was so dark in the woods that he could not even make out the tips of his fingernails, but when he got out of there, he found himself in a field, and just to his left was the light of a farmhouse, the house of the grave guard Nanabei, and he finally realized that it was Nanabei’s granddaughter who had saved him. –As soon as he thought, “Oh, so it was Hanayo…that’s all right then…,” he felt his legs lose strength, and he fell unsteadily to the side. The next morning, all I have is a shredded impression of what happened from then until the next morning.
